The first reference to Melazzano dates back to the State Archives of Florence of 1119. In 1427, the first Land Registry of the Florentine Republic describes the properties of the area consisting of large estates with “worker’s homes”.
Recent works revealed masonry typical of an imposing castle of the 11th century, confirming the link between the current Villa di Melazzano and the medieval “castrum de Milatiano” or castle of the militia as it was known.
In a document of the Capitani di Parte Guelfa, small “road atlas” of the Florentine countryside dating back to the mid-sixteenth century, Melazzano is described as a typical “turreted house”.
In the eighteenth century Melazzano was bought by the Anichini family who, incorporating the previous buildings, built the villa that they occupy to this day. The villa has retained its original character with its large rooms and frescoes.
The small family chapel was annexed to the Villa in the nineteenth century. In 1924, Melazzano was among the 18 farms that founded the Consortium del Chianti Classico wine which guarantees the quality of what is undoubtedly one of the most renowned wines in the world.
Melazzano is classified as a historical building.
